Learning

It's so much fun being back in the "high school-esque" routine of being away from home for more than eight hours in the day. I've been so busy with the things that I always had all day to do that I have slacked off on:

1) Blogging
2) Hulu... I have a queue of 14 unseen new shows... I might have to break up with a few of them.
3) Video Games

I'll have even less time once "ARUP Boot Camp" starts...

Today at work I got to take a "Hands-On Pipetting" class. It was scheduled to take an hour and a half to complete. It only took about thirty to forty-five minutes.

In the class we were required to calibrate a mechanical pipette at 20 uL with a spectrometer. The instructor told us that we could have an inaccuracy no greater than 1% and a lack of precision no greater than 2%. (So if the spectrometer told me that I actually pipetted 20.04 uL instead of 20.00 uL that is a pretty good number, but if it told me that I pipetted 24.00 uL then obviously I would be doing something wrong.)

When I performed the calibration--even though I've only used a mechanical pipette a few times--my accuracy/precision scores were better than the instructor's.

So I didn't have to stay very long.

My "mentor" also left me alone in the laboratory for about two hours. So I had to take a bunch of phone calls on my own that required some creative answers on my part.

I also had to keep the samples put away in their various test racks. (We get new samples brought up to the lab every hour.)

I had lunch with the supervisor over Molecular Genetics and she told me that my "mentor" said that I am grasping things really quickly and that I seem very smart. The supervisor told me she replied with something like "that's why we hired her."

I like having a good reputation. :P

But I'm still learning a lot of new things.

Busy Times

On Wednesday morning I got to the lab at 9:00 in the morning and luckily ran into Serene (my "mentor") after I got out of the elevators. Apparently, I was supposed to attend a meeting for the technicians with her. I didn't know where the meeting was so I just followed her through the maze of hallways to the Board Room.

Karen and Thor were both there (other technicians that have been there from 1-3 years) and so was Kerry our supervisor. Most of the meeting was about how they were going to go about training me. A lot of it was spent just talking. We watched a few funny movies from the Baldapalooza too since neither Karen nor Thor were able to attend that.

After the meeting I was sent up to work with the Document Control Specialist, Lindsay. She is pretty cool. I saw a few Brandon Sanderson novels on her desk so that served as an ice breaker and we seemed to get along really well. I spent four to five hours just reading documents and completing training modules on the computer.

Lindsay scheduled two appointments for me that afternoon. Ye Xiao is our Training Specialist and I spent more than an hour listening to her go through her part of the training process. She was difficult to listen to because English isn't her first language and she has a very strong Chinese accent. I tried my best to decipher everything she said, though, and for the most part I think I did fairly well.

After Ye Xiao introduced me to Ana Hooker (she is Pakistani or something) who is one of the "higher ups" in our division, she dropped me off at Missy's cubicle. Missy is the Quality Control Specialist. She deals with all of the problems and mistakes that our division makes in documentation and labeling... that sort of thing. By the time she was finished with her presentation for me, it was 16:00 and time to go.

Thursday was Thanksgiving and I was really excited to get paid for hanging out with everyone at Becca's. The joys of working full-time!

Today I actually got to spend some time in the laboratory. I followed Serene (my "mentor") around wherever she went and she explained everything she was doing in detail.

What the technicians do is mostly receiving specimens from both the automated track and manually. Then they sort the specimens into different racks depending on which tests have been ordered for those samples. They also prepare the runs for different tests and get tubes ready for DNA extraction. It's all very interesting to me. I don't go back in until Monday, but Serene said that I get to start doing "Pour-Offs" which means that I'll actually be handling the whole blood. I'm excited.

Preemptive Snow Plows

This morning I wasn't required to be at work until a little later in the morning. (8:00 rather than 7:50)

We spent a lot of time learning about benefit options and what sort of computer training we need to complete before actually doing specific things in the laboratory. Apparently I can actually get 100% tuition reimbursement for the major that I want to complete. So that's pretty cool.

At about noon we found out that the U was shutting down campus because of a blizzard that was supposed to be worse than Utah has seen in around two years. Everyone was encouraged to go home sooner rather than later. I clocked out at 2:45 or so (we were supposed to have a full 8 hour day) and got picked up at 3:30.

On the way back home we saw a snow plow already laying down salt. The sky was kind of gray-ish and the sky to the northwest was blue. It didn't look like there would be a storm rolling in to hit us all with a nasty blizzard... but that's what they said was going to happen.

When I got home I checked wunderground.com for more information about the weather. The "winter weather warning" explained that 4-8 inches of snow are expected to accumulate by morning. There was also a travel advisory based on high speed winds with gusts up to 60 mph. The high-wind-speed-warning was taken down at about 6 or 7 in the evening and after riding with Emma from Becca's back home... I have decided that all the hype from earlier today was almost completely unnecessary.

Maybe things will be different in the morning.

Maybe not.

Either way I still get to go to work for the first time in the Molecular Genetics department.

NEO

This morning I got to work half an hour earlier than I needed to because I had my dad drop me off and I wasn't sure how long it would take for us to get there. I was the first of my New Employee Orientation group to get there. We all got taken into an HR Training Room and started a very long day of learning procedures/policies, and signing papers.

There were seven others in my group, none of which will be working in my department.

David - Exceptions Handling (the department that figures out what to do with specimens that come in damaged or un-testable)

Zach - Research and Development (clinical experimentation in pathology)

Fa'te - Immunology (obviously or not... immune system tests)

Cory - I really don't remember where he's going... Oncology or something

Stacy - A med tech... don't remember what department

Megan - Automated Endocrinology

Quiet Girl - I don't remember anything about her at all either.

The highlight of my day was during lunch when the head honcho at HR got his hair shaved off as an incentive for the last year's food drive. He said he'd shave his head if they raised $15,000 thinking that there would be no way people would want him to shave his head that much.

They ended up with a grand total of $24,500 and the "Baldapalooza 2010" was hilarious.

Tomorrow I get to learn about my benefits for working full time.

Background Check?

Check!

It went through faster than expected, and ARUP decided to push my start date up to this Monday. I'll have to work through Thanksgiving, but that's fine with me.

It'll be one hundred percent official when I've signed the written offer at "New Employee Orientation" from Monday-Tuesday... and then I'll be working full-time in a laboratory!

One step closer to continuing my medical education and that's good enough.

:D

ARUP

Well, they called me back for a second interview after a month of silence. I had all but lost hope in getting a job there.

Long story short, they offered me a job in Molecular Genetics and I accepted. I train from November 29-December 1 and then I will be a full time employee.

Hannah's Hiatus at Home

We decided a little while ago that we wanted to celebrate Hannah's 19th birthday with her right here. Unfortunately, she couldn't come down from Rexburg on her actual birthday. It has been fun having her here for the weekend, though.

When she got home I was watching HIMYM with my friend Charla. We took a break in order to sing Happy Birthday to Hannah, eat cake and ice cream, and watch her open presents. The informal party ended up taking a little longer than we originally thought it would so we only watched a few more episodes before Charla went home.

Then Hannah and I visited Grandma Gerie and played with her new-ish kitten. Afterwards we came back home and I introduced Hannah to my newest show, Veronica Mars, which I unfortunately did not discover until after my fanhood wouldn't count to boost its ratings. But what a program! We watched until 0200 (much later than my regular bedtime) and then we decided that it would probably be a good idea to get some sleep. Sleep is good.

More of the Same

I spent the night at Grandma Gerie's last night. I took her to the DMV this morning at 0800. I advise everyone who lives in Utah *not* to go to the DMV on Wednesdays because that's the day that all the CDL people go get their licenses.

I mowed the front lawn and clipped a bunch of giant flower stalks. Hemlock? I'm not sure what they're called. But they have a tendency to shed slivers all over while you're clipping them down. That was kind of obnoxious.

I'm spending the night again and helping Grandma with more yard work tomorrow. We're also going to go see Aubriel's play. That should be fun.

Halloween Weekend

A few months ago my friend Charla and a bunch of friends decided that it would be fun to dress up as the Muses from Disney's Hercules.

A month later, the other friends bailed and it was just going to be me and Charla who would be Muses. We decided that you can't have just two Muses and still be cool, and came up with dozens of awesome costume ideas. We finally settled on being Nazi Zombies.

But then when we checked out the stores for supplies, we realized that those costumes would be way too expensive. So we decided to be regular zombies from Left for Dead 2.

A week before Halloween, Uncle Michael told me about his awesome LotR idea. I had already committed to hanging out with Charla on Saturday and that's when the event would be happening for the LotR group as well. I spent much of the day Friday making a new LotR-centered costume for Owen of the Witch King. On Saturday I figured out a way to make Mariel look kind of elven. Maybe like a LotRO character... no one specific but still cool.

When the time came for Mariel and Owen to go meet the group, my friend still hadn't contacted me even though I'd tried to contact her multiple times about what was going on.

I ended up joining the Lord of the Rings group as a zombie. If I had known that I'd be spending the evening with them anyway, I would have made something cooler for myself. Like the Eye of Sauron.

But it was still fun.

I didn't take any pictures, but many pictures were taken. I hope to see them soon.

Witch King

That's all I've got so far.

Halloween Costumes

They're really fun to make. I'm now constructing a new costume for Owen so he can join the LotR ensemble tomorrow evening. He'll be the witch king.

Still No Job

I suppose I can't say that I've been "actively" pursuing a job since I'm not applying for new jobs every day. Maybe I'd actually get hired if I did that. Maybe I'll start being more active about getting a job and then I can join the noble workforce of the State of Utah.

It's very discouraging, though, when I am led on by interviewers who pretend they'll be getting in touch with me and then decide that for whatever reason, I'm not right for the job and never call me back. So what am I supposed to do?

First step, get a job. Second step, go back to school and get a degree in Medical Technology or something cool like that. Third step, skip the first and second steps and just write a novel. It *is* almost November, after all. Fourth step, you rolled doubles twice, go straight to jail, do not pass GO, do not collect $200. Hmm... that's just not appealing at all.

I've got it!! I'll just become a hippie and live off the land. Join a commune or something. Or I can become one of those video game testers who make millions and never do anything but sit on their fat butts all day pretending to live inside their XBOX. What a life.

Or maybe I'll go buy those P90X workouts and get so fit that producers are begging me to come be a stunt double for their awesome BJJ scenes.

I welcome the ideas of others. What next?

O Ye of Little Faith

Of course I'm still living with my family! Why would I want to pay for room and board when I can get it for free? That would be silly.

Interviews and More Interviews

I've interviewed with supervisors in three different departments of ARUP Laboratories.

I am most interested in Virology. My second choice is Molecular Genetics and my least favorite of the three is Infectious Disease Processing. The reason for these preferences is that I would get the most hands-on experience in Virology and then Genetics and so forth.

Prayers that one of these positions will work out would be very much appreciated. :)

A Less Wimpy Post

I haven't been up to a whole lot lately. For the last two weeks I was waiting for Hannah to move out so that I could paint the closet/my escape... but the day after Hannah left I came down with her nasty cold. So now I'm waiting to feel well enough again to recommence with living... starting with painting that closet a lovely Indian Ocean green and finally getting all of my stuff organized.

Hopefully the sore throat, stuffed nose, liquid lungs, and achy-all-over will be gone after a good night's rest tonight so that I can actually participate in BJJ tomorrow morning. If not, good show anyway.

I just finished reading The Lightning Thief and have now started on The Sea of Monsters. I've decided that I like Rick Riordan's writing style and his sense of humor. I look forward to his future works. I'm also finished with Mockinjay if anyone needs or wants a buddy to talk about how awesome it was with. Text me. 3157152111.

Other than that my time lately has been spent watching movies on Netflix or rented from the library. And playing Nacht der Untoten Nazi Zombies via Call of Duty: World at War. The highest I've gotten alone is Round 11. Highest with a friend is Round 13. We were quite pleased with ourselves. It's harder than it looks. :P

My Talk

(I made a lot of red-inked-pen changes ten minutes before the actual talk... so much of this has changed. I gave away the typed/amended thing to a girl who asked for a copy of it... so the actual original is not really copy-able... but here's what I printed out:)

"Bear with patience thine afflictions, and I will give unto you success." (Alma 26:27)

Life is full of difficulties. Some are more trying than others, but all require patience if we want to become as Jesus is.

A few semesters ago, I had just finished writing a paper that was due in a few days. Neither I nor my roommates had a printer so I'd have to walk to the library. I decided that since it cold and dark outside, I would wait until tomorrow or the next day to print off the paper. I made a mental note to remember to print it off, and went to sleep. A few days later, I woke up with only an hour to spare before class, and to my dismay, I realized that the paper I had not remembered to print out was due that morning. The professor had made it very clear that the papers would not be accepted if they were turned in after the first five minutes of class. I jumped out of bed, tripped over my backpack, angrily kicked it aside, and made a B-line for the closet. I got dressed and was about ready to walk out the door when my roommate mentioned that my pants were on backwards and my shirt was inside-out. I glared at her, ran back into my room, frantically re-dressed and rushed out the door. I started to sprint across the snow-covered parking-lot, and slipped on a patch of black ice. I tried to regain my balance, but my ankle bent the wrong way and I collapsed onto the ground. My backpack was heavy and full of textbooks. I fell twice more before managing to get back onto my feet. When I had finally limped my way up to the library, there were only fifteen minutes until class would start. Ten minutes of computer trouble and two broken staples later, I was on my way to class. Seething, I pushed through the crowds, glared at some, and ignored the rest. I may have gotten my paper in on time, but I hate to think of who I might have hurt with my impatience.

President Uchtdorf has said that "impatience is a symptom of selfishness. It is a trait of the self-absorbed. It arises from the all-too-prevalent condition called 'center of the universe" syndrome, which leads people to believe that the world revolves around them and that all others are just supporting cast in the grand theater of mortality in which only they have the starring role. How different this is, my dear brothers and sisters, from the standard the Lord as set for us as his children."

As representatives of the Lord Jesus Christ, we must serve others in a manner consistent with His example, with faith, hope, and charity.

The greatest scriptural examples of patience are found in the life of Jesus Christ. His long-suffering and endurance are best demonstrated on that excruciating night in Gethsemane as He uttered, in His atoning agony, "O my Father, if it be possible, let this cup pass from me: nevertheless not as I will, but as thou wilt". He truly suffered and endured all things.

While nailed to the cross on Calvary, Christ continued in His perfect example of patience as He uttered the singular words, "Father, forgive them; for they know not what they do."

Christ's examples of patience have much greater meaning for us when we consider 3 Nephi 27:27: "Therefore, what manner of men ought ye to be? Verily I say unto you, even as I am."

Patience is an important and worthy virtue for our diligent pursuit.

Elder Neal A. Maxwell taught that "patience is tied very closely to faith in our Heavenly Father. Actually, when we are unduly impatient, we are suggesting that we know what is best--better than does God. Or, at least, we are asserting that our timetable is better than His."

I have been blessed with faithfully patient parents who understand this principle.

Months ago, my parents received an impression that it was time for our family to relocate. We went through a period of not knowing whether or not anything was going to happen, and I started to amend all of my plans for the future with, "if we move to this place or that or if we stay right where we are." It was difficult for me to think about getting our house ready to sell when there wasn't even a job offer yet. But my mom knew better and had been working on house-betterment-projects during the entire period of uncertainty. Her diligence and patient waiting certainly has decreased the amount of anxiety we might have had to experience with such a quick relocation. We are moving to Salt Lake City in the next couple of weeks.

President Uchtdorf has taught that waiting is hard, but that patience isn't merely waiting. "Patience requires actively working toward worthwhile goals and not getting discouraged when results don't appear instantly or without effort. Patience is not passive resignation, nor is it failing to act because of our fears or uncertainty. Patience means active waiting and enduring. It means staying with something and doing all that we can--working, hoping, and exercising faith; bearing hardship with fortitude, even when the desires of our hearts are delayed. Patience is not simply enduring; it is enduring well."

Since impatience is so natural, how do we develop the divine virtue of patience? How do we move our behavior toward that of our perfect example, Jesus Christ?

In his talk titled The Power of Patience, Elder Robert C. Oaks of the Seventy outlines five steps that can help us develop our patience.

The first step is to recognize and understand that to develop such patience is necessary if we desire to fully enjoy the blessings of the restored gospel.

The second is to read the scriptures and ponder Christ's patient examples. The Topical Guide is a good place to start.

The third step is to evaluate ourselves to determine where we stand on the patience continuum. How much more patience do we need to become more Christlike? This self-assessment is difficult. We might ask a close friend or family member to help us.

The fourth is to become sensitive to the examples of patience and of impatience that occur around us every day. We should strive to emulate those individuals we consider to be patient.

The last step that Elder Oaks outlined is to recommit each day to become more Christlike in our patience. We should enlist that close friend or family member to help us along the way.

Four Elders

I got a letter in the mail today from an Elder. Mom said she didn't recognize his name and I was hoping that it was from Elder Kutterer. Apparently one of my missionary friends has a roommate named Elder Fetokai. He and his companion live with said missionary friend and his roommate. They all decided to send a letter to a friend of one of the others. It's all very confusing. I wrote back to Elder Fetokai. I also wrote a letter to each of his roommates since he gave all of their names. (And I already know Elder Hunter.) I sent them all in the same envelope, though, because I'm thrifty. :P

Line

I've been pushing my managers to train me on the line for a while now. The line is where we make sandwiches and salads and get peoples' orders ready.

They finally decided that all of the regular cashiers needed to be trained on the line because none of us really knew how to build all of the sandwiches and salads.

Today I was scheduled to make sandwiches. According to my scheduling manager I picked it up very quickly. While I was working, Bruce made the comment, "Whoa, Koehler's already consolidating her first time on line. What are you teaching this girl?" (I was only really supposed to be making sandwiches today but I decided to help 'consolidate' the orders onto their individual trays... and that's what I'd been doing.) I smiled and continued working.

Tomorrow I will learn salads.

Apple Seed Experiment

I'm making an attempt to grow a tree from apple seeds. Wish me luck. And allow many years for my goal's expected completion.

Same Stuff, Different Pile

Yep, that's pretty much how things are going. I work and then I come home and go to sleep and then wake up and work and come home and go to sleep and so on. (Obviously with a bit of variation.) But nothing super interesting has been happening lately. Such is life. Hannah and I are planning on doing a road trip out to Utah at the very end of August. Hopefully that will work out.

Fireworks and Mosquito Bites

Mom and Dad went to Maine for the weekend. I took Owen and Mariel to the bridge (about a half mile away) to watch the Brewerton fireworks show. We got there about forty-five minutes before the show actually started. All of us were being feasted upon by mosquitoes and other less-than-delightful bugs. I think I'd have preferred watching the show from our porch. Mariel said that the show had a "crappy finale." It would have been fine if we weren't being eaten alive the entire time.

Hay Un Amigo En Mi

Hannah and I went to go see Toy Story 3 today because we were bored and I had a free movie ticket pass. We both really enjoyed it. I won't say more because I don't want to ruin anything for those who haven't seen it yet.

In Which I Remember Why I Only Put My Availability Until Six O' Clock PM

I got into work again at 5:30 tonight. I had to miss my BJJ class in order to work. But it's worth getting the hours, I guess. I just got home almost an hour ago and boy, are my feet killing me. Closing a bakery takes a lot of work. Best workout I've gotten in a long time. Maybe I'll do it again just for that. :P

Double Shift Today

I'm finally getting people asking me to pick up shifts for them. Hopefully I'll continue to be able to take more and more hours until I make enough to go back to school.

This Should Be Interesting

I'm beginning to make an attempt to read the entire standard works in... wait for it... chronological order.

Not Much to Say

Today is very warm and humid. I went to work in the morning, but it was extremely slow for a Saturday so they let me go home. I'm glad to have the extra few hours to relax. It's going to be a nice weekend.

Moved Out

I woke up at 1300 hours today. For some reason as soon as summer comes 'round my body decides that bedtime is four o' clock in the morning and breakfast is due at noon.

After about an hour of lounging around at Grandma Gerie's I decided to be responsible and go back down to Provo in order to check out of my apartment. I'd already moved most of my things out a few days ago so the only thing that really needed to be done was cleaning... and leaving my key behind.

So I did that.

And then I took the bus back up to Salt Lake and got a ride from Brian Summers back to his house to watch the second half of Utah Jazz vs Colorado Nuggets. The Jazz won. Then Charla took me and my bike back to Grandma Gerie's.

Now it's time for bed. (At least that's what my mind thinks... my body probably will disagree again. Maybe I'll just watch some more episodes of How I Met Your Mother until I'm tired enough to fall asleep.)

Close Your Eyes and Hold On Tight

Today I took all four of my finals. I don't have my scores posted on the monitor in the Testing Center, so I have no idea how I did on any of them. But I do feel good about all of them. I'm sure that I'll get the scores I deserve.

Now I'm looking forward to moving back home for the summer and figuring out where to go from here.

It doesn't matter so much, though. Many more beautiful days await.

Finals Week

Today is the last day of class, two reading days follow, and then finals week begins. To the dismay of most students, including me, Saturday will be included in the testing days. Hopefully I will get all of my tests finished between Friday and Saturday and have a week of preparation before Spring semester starts. I think I will drop all of the classes I selected for Summer semester so that I don't have to worry about funds for the entire 2010-2011 academic year quite as much, and so that I will have time to visit home and go to my brother's baptism and my sister's graduation. These are important events to me, and I think I should be there for them.

Yesterday I spent the entire day (well, most of it) studying in the library. I felt quite accomplished. The next three days will include much of the same activity. Today, however, I'll be attending some fun events instead of spending every second of the day in the library. The first is the Unforum, which should be mildly entertaining. The next is an evening celebration in the Wilk which will provide my free dinner. :) I look forward to that.

After all of this I will likely spend the reading days up in Salt Lake City so that I have my own space to study in, and then I will return to take my exams.

Wish me luck.

Saturday Adventure

I had gone up to Salt Lake City to stay with my Grandma Gerie for the weekend. I spent Friday night at her house reading Gregor the Overlander and occasionally watching bits and pieces of movies. And, of course, snacking on chocolate frosting. Mmmm...

Meanwhile my friends in Provo were all going to see Divine Comedy. And all my friends in Salt Lake were either busy or at birthday parties. It was one of the most boring Friday nights of my life.

So in the morning I decided to hop on Trax and go back down to Provo. And I did. On the way back down to Provo I had to wait with a group of people for the 811 Southbound bus. It wouldn't get there for twenty minutes.

A large Tongan man who was quite drunk and stank from fifteen feet away was talking to everyone incessantly. Swearing like a sailor he asked people inappropriate questions and told inappropriate stories about drugs, prison, and "teachin' bleepity bleepin' kids not to shoot each otha"--quite charming.

I had to put my bicycle on the bike rack in front of the bus so I was last in line to actually get on the bus. The large drunk Tongan dude stumbled on the bus first, and unfortunately since I was the last person to get on the bus, the only seat available was in the back just a few feet away from the creeper who had been drinking too much.

Fortunately he focused his inappropriate questions and inappropriate stories on two hipster teenagers sitting across the way from me. Of course, I laughed at most of the conversation they were having. The whole thing was completely ridiculous. I sent a text to my friend asking about what counts as public intoxication. Luckily, right as I sent the message the bus driver stopped at another bus stop and walked to the back of the bus with a new passenger.

"You're going to get off of my bus."

"What did I do wrong?"

"Get off my bus. Now."

The drunk guy obliged, cussing the whole time. He threw in some rude gestures after he got off the bus. Everyone in the back of the bus sighed in relief. We opened the windows and hoped that soon the stench of booze would air out... eventually.

It did. But I had to take a shower just to get his smell off of my skin.

Afterward, Charla asked me if I'd want to hang out with her tonight. Of course I would, and I went outside to hop on the bus back up to the south-most Trax station.

Thankfully, the bus ride back up to the train was much less exciting, and I was able to read most of Gregor the Overlander. By the time I got up to Fort Union I had finished the book. (Loved it.)

Charla picked me up and we went to the mall so that she could use her gift card she got for Christmas last year (since the mall was on the way.) We went back to her house and played Nintendo 64 Mario Kart with its terrible resolution. We watched part of Shallow Hal but decided we were both too tired to continue.

Now it is Sunday and we're all getting ready for church. She'll be my ride back to Provo this afternoon, and then it's back to the normal routine.

Classic Skating

I just got back from the Classic Skating center in Orem. My friends Kayla and Ruth are on the BYU Womens' Rugby team and they were doing a fundraiser there to go play in Florida. So a bunch of my friends and I went there to help her out. It was a ton of fun.

I brought my rollerblades which was a very good idea. I like blading and ice skating. It's my favorite. :)

I'm Back

But not writing in one-sentence form anymore. Hooray!

Last week was great. It was so much fun being able to see all of my aunts and uncles and my mommy! All in the same place. I'm happy for my uncle Steven who just got married. And now I'm glad things are back to normal.

It seems that I will be staying in Provo for the summer. Hopefully I will be able to go home for Owen's baptism but my trip back home might have to wait until after summer semester is over since classes start the same week of Owen's birthday. It would be nice, though, to be able to be home for his birthday and for Hannah's graduation.

Maybe I'll just decide not to take classes for Summer semester so that I can go home for those big events.

If anyone has awesome ideas let me know!!

:)

The Day That I Got To Ride In A Tow Truck...

Woke up naturally quite early, took a shower, went to get breakfast with Charla, found out that the cable guy wasn't going to come to Scott's condo until next Thursday so we didn't have to sleep over there after all, went back to Charla's house and killed zombies, watched a bunch of episodes of Firefly, rode with Charla back down to Provo, got dropped off on the corner of campus, walked straight up to the Wilk for a BJJ letter-writing party, had tons of fun watching people fight, also had tons of fun writing fake letters with Charity and Mitchell, helped clean up, looked for Charity's keys for an hour, didn't find them, reminded Charity that AAA does a free tow for members, stayed with Charity and a bunch of others to wait for the tow truck guy, went into the library to plug my phone in since the tow truck guy only had my cell number, told the tow truck guy how to get to the parking lot, walked back to the parking lot and drank hot chocolate that Collin brought back for us, went with Charity into the tow truck, watched Charity's car get pulled onto the tow truck, took pictures, instructed the tow truck guy on how to get to the duck pond where he'd leave Charity's car, laughed at our silly friends, got into Collin's car with Jon, Charity, Kayla, John, Miller, and Collin and rode with them back to Collin's apartment, watched Jon and Collin kill Nazi Zombies for a while, retreated to the kitchen to play Phase 10 with everyone, got to "phase 5" with Charity and Miller when we called it quits and decided that the three of us tied for the win, went back to my apartment, tried to be quiet coming in and getting ready for bed, hopefully didn't fail at trying to be quiet, wrote my very long run-on sentence and went to sleep.

I will laugh if the ref gets sued), went back to Charla's house, killed more zombies, came to Scott's empty condo with Charla, watched an episode of Firefly with Charla, decided to go to sleep, forgot to write a sentence but wrote it the next day.

The Day That I Destroyed Many, Many Zombies...

Woke up really late because I am still sick, got up and had some breakfast, went for a walk because it was nice outside again, came back and did some schoolwork, shot zombies over and over and over again on my computer, watched a couple of shows, realized that I was being very lazy and unproductive today, was pleased when Chris offered to bring some DayQuil over for me, felt guilty taking the unopened package of DayQuil, took it anyway, wished Chris good luck on his quantum mechanics exam, went back inside and killed some more zombies, watched a few more shows, decided to turn my day into a productive one by doing a lot of homework and a lot of studying, and then finally went to bed many hours later.

The Day That I Realized That I Am Addicted to Brazilian Jiu Jitsu and MMA...

Woke up late-ish, went to my classes, was surprised when the power went out in the Clyde Building during class, laughed at the silly jokes everyone told in the dark while we waited for the power to come back on, was even more surprised when the fire alarm went off and we had to evacuate, ran into Spencer, walked around campus with Spencer for a while, heard that someone who was working in the basement of the Clyde Building had good sources that a transformer (whatever that is) died and then caught on fire, told all my friends about what happened before BYU sent out a mass email saying that classes in the Clyde Building are cancelled through Friday due to the "power outage", went back to my apartment, studied for a bit, watched a show done by National Geographic about fighting styles and scientifically how they specifically affect the body, practiced BJJ with Clarke, didn't lose to him, practiced BJJ with Clinton, lost every time to him, went to Wendy's with Clinton, went back to the Smith Fieldhouse, learned how to box (kind of), enjoyed learning how to box, went to Charity's house with the gang, had amazing cupcakes at Charity's house, got tired, went back to my apartment, reflected on my very fulfilling day and subsequently decided to call it good.

Thursday, January 28, 2010

The Day That I Managed to Beat Someone More Advanced Than Me...

Woke up, went to class, came back home from class, studied (kind of), had an emotional breakdown, recovered from the emotional breakdown, studied (kind of) some more, went to BJJ, loved every second of it, was beaten twice by Ruth, beat Cassidy twice (because her style is more defensive than offensive), came back home, had the home teachers over, tried to study physics with Clinton for a while, ended up playing Craphead and losing miserably, looked for Clinton's keys, failed for fifteen minutes, laughed when Clinton found his keys in his backpack, came back home, and decided to try to come up with things to do before going to sleep.

They Day That I Broke Chemistry and Gave My Number to Five Different Guys...

Woke up at 7, lazily got ready for school, walked up to campus, went to my classes, hated my organic recitation with a passion since our TA is a terrible TA, went back home, studied for a while, watched an episode of Castle, then watched an episode of Chuck, went to my chemistry lab, did everything right according to the TA but my equipment for some reason was malfunctioning, tried again three different times but failed, finally realized that my flask had a tiny crack in it that the nitrogen gas was escaping through very slowly, replaced the flask, redid the experiment, got near-perfect results, gave my number to two of my chemistry lab partners (who both happen to be of the male persuasion), went back home, ate some dinner, walked back up to campus, went to the Swing Kids Club, went to the Salsa Club, gave my number to Fernando and Elmaro, went to the Country Dance Club, gave my number to Ray, saw Clarke, told Clarke to come to BJJ practice, walked back home and called it a night.

Woke up too late, relaxed for a bit, walked over to the field house annex, learned some basic boxing stuff, practiced the basic boxing stuff, practiced some BJJ, got punched in the face by Charity, then got hooked on the jaw by Charity (all this because I got a kidney shot in), practiced some more, stayed there for around four hours, walked back home, went to the mall, walked back home, hoped I wouldn't have to snap a bad guy's neck, watched a new episode of 24 and went to sleep.

The Day That I Beat Up a Guy Twice My Size...

Woke up at 5, didn't go running, got ready for class, walked up to campus two hours before Organic Chemistry was supposed to actually start, studied for a bit, walked down to the IPF for my Martial Arts class, learned a ton of new stuff, enjoyed walking home in the SUN, kind of goofed around all afternoon, went to BJJ club, learned some new techniques, employed the new techniques, felt dizzy when the new techniques were used against me, went home because I was dehydrated and needed some rest, went to a friend's house (a friend who knows pretty much nothing about BJJ), practiced the moves on him, taught him the moves, realized that he was much bigger and stronger than me, was impressed at how quickly he caught on, decided to just grapple and see who would win first, I won three times in a row, was cheered on by the friend's roommate, walked back home in my gi, felt less silly since the friend walked me home and was also wearing a gi, typed my run-on sentence and was so full of energy that I decided to stay up reading instead of being lame and going to sleep early (why not... three day weekend coming up anyway innit.)

Tuesday, January 12, 2010

The Day That I Finally Got My Gi...

Woke up at 4am, drank some water, bundled up, went running with Klaas, breathed in polluted air (in fact, the most polluted in the nation today...), came back home, made oatmeal, took a shower while the oatmeal was simmering, poured the oatmeal over cubed pear, ate my delicious oatmeal, got ready for class, went to Organic Chemistry, left five minutes early to get to the IPF on time to change, got my gi (hooray!!), learned something new, didn't get to practice the something new as much as my partner did, changed back into semi-normal clothes, hustled up the GIANT staircase to campus, hurried to the MARB for class, sat in the back right as the bell rang, left five minutes early because the last time I came on time to Macedone's class every empty seat was being saved for someone else, sat in the front row, enjoyed chemistry, walked back down to my apartment, realized that I'd lost Catching Fire somewhere on campus, was very depressed, tried to recruit my friends to help me find it, was sad when one decided to be a jerk about it, realized that real friends are okay with doing things a little bit out of their way to help, still didn't find the book even after I trudged all the way back to campus to make sure the friends simply didn't recognize the book, went to the library, tried to study, missed my book, worried about what would happen when I still don't find the book and it's due, pushed that worry to the back of my mind, went to the Wilk to watch an episode, got distracted with Gmail Video Chat, enjoyed video chatting with my daddy even though I don't have a computer camera, headed back to my apartment so that I'd be back in time for Family Home Evening, slipped on some ice in the parking lot, tried to get up, slipped again, slowly got to my feet, limped inside, took off my shoes and put on flip-flops, walked over to FHE, enjoyed playing the say-the-name-hit-the-face game and sucking hot chocolate out of Tim Tams, walked back to my apartment, got ready for bed, wrote my run-on sentence and went to sleep.

Sunday, January 10, 2010

The Day That I Dressed Up For Church...

Woke up to my alarm at 5, decided that since it was Sunday it would be okay for me to sleep in, slept in and had a dream about skydiving and riding bicycles with attractive boys (See Here), woke back up at around 8 or 9, got out of bed and relaxed for a while, got ready for church, was happy that Emma commented that my outfit was cute (I wore the brown skirt that Mom gave me), walked to church, couldn't find any of my roommates anywhere, sat alone, enjoyed church nonetheless, walked back to my apartment, ate dinner with the roommates, told the story about the time that I broke Teylor into her house via the cat door, walked with Klaas to his new apartment, practiced some moves I learned in Jiu Jitsu with him, felt like I had a pretty good handle on the moves that I learned in Jiu Jitsu, walked back to my apartment with Klaas, said goodbye to Klaas, came into my room, wrote my run-on sentence and (most likely) went to bed soon thereafter.

Saturday, January 9, 2010

The Day That My First Week of Classes Was Over...

Woke up at 5:20am (ish), read part of my book, watched an episode of Dollhouse, didn't really enjoy it as much as I have enjoyed previous episodes, went to campus, read some more of my book, went to the BJJ club meeting in the Wilk, didn't actually participate because there was an odd number of girls, went to the library, finished reading Hero of Ages, loved it like crazy, checked out Catching Fire, went back to my apartment, went for a run, felt out of shape, walked the rest of the way, goofed around, practiced some things I learned in Martial Arts class, came back to my apartment, chillaxed for a while until I got crazy tired, wrote my run-on sentence and went to sleep for goodness' sake!

The Day That the Neighbors Decided to Have a Dance Party At My Bedtime...

Woke up at 3am for who knows why, went back to sleep and woke up again at 5, convinced myself with great difficulty to get out of bed, got ready to go to class, went to class, came back to my apartment, goofed around all day, waited for TJ to come over, went to get some food with TJ because I was hungry, drove to Cabela's only to find out that they close early now, came back to my apartment, watched a little NCIS with Otter Pop, played "Crap Head" which I know as "Palace" with the roommates and TJ, got tired enough to quit and decide to go to bed, was mortified when I discovered that the white house not 20 feet away from my room was blasting music that I despise, considered waiting until 11 and getting the police involved, changed my mind even though the noise level easily surpasses my earplugs' ability to block out sound, wrote my run-on sentence and hoped like crazy that I'd be able to get to sleep early enough tonight to wake up on time for life tomorrow.

Thursday, January 7, 2010

The Day That I Wasn't a Dull Boy...

Woke up at 4:19 but was extremely tired (shouldn't have stayed up past 9 last night...), took a lot longer than usual to get out of bed, got out of bed anyway, did the usual, went to campus, came back to my apartment, made a new blog about my crazy random weirdo dreams, wondered if I should keep it public, ate some food, read some Molecular Biology, read some other stuff, did some homework, watched an episode (or two O_o) of 24, lazed about, did some more homework and did calisthenics at the same time, finally wrote a letter back to Seth via DearElder.com since I have no stamps, reminded myself that I need to go to bed early tonight, wrote my run-on sentence and reluctantly tried to sleep.

Wednesday, January 6, 2010

The Day That I Didn't Do Quite Everything That I Had Planned To Do...

Woke up at around 400 hours, once again contemplated staying in bed but realized that I'd be getting up in an hour anyway, got out of bed, ate breakfast whilst reading more in Hero of Ages, got ready for class, walked up to campus, attended O-Chem, practically ran down to the IPF for Martial Arts, tried to go in through the wrong door, walked all the way to the other side of the IPF, changed in the bathroom, walked back out and watched the football team practice for a bit, warmed up, realized how out of shape I have gotten, made a note to myself to start running again, enjoyed learning some basic BJJ stuff, didn't have time to change back into normal clothes, huffed my way up the giant staircase onto campus, attended MMBIO, sat next to the 'mates, went to GenChem, tried to sit down but kept being told that the seat I had just sat down in was being saved, finally found a seat that wasn't being saved, enjoyed Dr. Macedone's lecture, went back to my apartment, goofed around for a bit, invited Spencer over, watched Dr. Horrible's Sing-Along Blog while doing homework and cooking things (I'm a multitasker :P), walked up to campus with Spencer, ordered for Spencer at the Scoreboard Grill since he'd never been there before, stole some of his curly fries, went over to the Wilk Terrace for BJJ Club, hustled over to the SWKT once I realized tonight was "Ward Calling Night", got my calling, had no clue what it actually was (such is life at BYU), walked back over to the Wilk, slipped on very invisible ice a few times, felt silly, learned some BJJ stuff, enjoyed wrasslin' and chokin' people, walked back to my apartment since it was past my bedtime, talked with Emma about stuff, thought about neglecting my One Sentence A Day blog for a brief moment, gave in to habit and wrote my run-on sentence, will probably read a chapter or two in Hero of Ages before I totally pass out from extreme fatigue.

Tuesday, January 5, 2010

The Day of Crazy Random Happenstances...

Woke up at 5am, got out of bed even though I was tempted to lie there for another hour, ate breakfast, got ready for school, walked up to campus with Emma in the FREEZING-ness, went to REL A122 for RM's and mature students (I simply HAD to have this particular teacher), ran into two Anatomy TA's and a few friends, went to OChem Recitation, was bored out of my mind by OChem Recitation, recognized one of the other students in aforementioned really boring class, went to the ATMs by the Wilk Terrace and transferred funds between various accounts just for kicks (not really), ran into Elyse and Katherine and Arielle, walked back to my apartment, did some homework, watched another episode of 24 (since we got back together... I just have to finish the 7th season before the next one starts!! :P), figured out my reading schedule via Google Calendar (which I now almost completely rely on), walked back up to campus in the freezing-ness, slipped on the ice a few times but maintained balance, attended the lecture portion of my Chem Lab class, ran into Mikey (Sarah's brother), had to pee, ended up going into the wrong lab room but stayed there anyway because my station was across the way from some REALLY attractive single peoples of the male variety, enjoyed oogling at the boys whilst attempting to calibrate my pipette, continued to enjoy oogling at the boys whilst polishing a glass tubey thing with a Bunsen Burner, finally finished checking in, bade farewell to the cute boys (hey, Emma met Dean in her Chem Lab... there's a chance!), walked back to my apartment in the freezing-ness, did more homework and studying, wrote my run-on sentence, and mentally prepared to read some Hero of Ages before calling it a night.

The First Day of Classes...

Woke up at 4:30am, went back to sleep, woke up again at 6am, prepared for class, walked up to campus, went to Organic Chemistry, went to Martial Arts, went to Molecular Biology, went to Inorganic Chemistry, got Hero of Ages from the library because I simply cannot wait to read the rest of it, walked back to the apartment, created the Ceiling of Hot, did some homework, saw Grandma Jane and Emma, did some more homework, took a shower, watched an episode of 24 (we got back together), wrote my run-on sentence, will most likely do some more homework to get ahead, and will hopefully fall asleep more quickly than I did yesterday.

The Day That I Realized How Long Mornings Really Are...

Woke up at 6am, hit the snooze, woke up again at 9(ish), got out of bed, organized my room, relaxed, took a shower, got ready for church, went to church, came home from church, thought about going to Salt Lake but ended up deciding to stay in Provo, steamed a bunch of vegetables but didn't use enough water (because the pan ended up catching on fire... fancy that), put the very yummy looking vegetables into tupperware containers for tomorrow, ate some macaroni and cheese mixed with broccoli cheddar soup, figured out what classes I have tomorrow, got ready for bed, wrote my run-on sentence, and started feeling tired way too early Provo time.

The Day That I Dreamt About Flying While On a Plane...

Woke up at 4am(ish), finished packing my things, said goodbye to Mom, said goodbye to Mariel, drove with Dad to the airport in the snow, said goodbye to Dad, went easily through security, found my gate, waited for ages, finally boarded 5 minutes before the plane was supposed to depart, sat on the plane for around an hour waiting for the plane to get de-iced and for the runway to get cleared of snow, finally took off, was so tired that I was in and out of sleep for the entire flight, didn't realize when we actually landed (I think I must have been asleep when we hit the ground because I was surprised that we were already in NYC), waited for a few hours, got onto my connecting flight without delay, slept for most of the flight from NYC to SLC, dreamed that I was flying over a big lake with military-grade wings (go figure), woke up and watched the ground for the last hour of the flight, had no difficulty getting my bags, was picked up by Grandma Gerie, ate lunch at Grandma's house, drank a Pepsi (courtesy of Grandma), drove down to Provo with Grandma (also courtesy of Grandma), accepted a call from Uncle Michael and committed to babysitting Ellie tonight, arrived at Provo, said goodbye to Grandma, thanked her for the ride, unpacked my backpack, started walking toward campus with my emptied backpack, called home and told them I was in Provo, walked up the giant staircase to campus since the Tanner Building was closed, returned a library book, purchased expensive textbooks for this semester, walked back down to my apartment, unpacked the rest of my things, called Uncle Michael and told him that I would be free to babysit anytime henceforth, read pages 1-12 of my Molecular Biology textbook, went to babysit Ellie, enjoyed the cuteness and intelligence of Ellie, came back to my apartment, went to Smith's and purchased fresh fruits and vegetables for the week, came back to my apartment, put the groceries away, wrote my run-on sentence, and forced myself to go to bed early.

The Day That I Got Ready To Go Back To Provo...

Woke up earlier than I did yesterday, watched as time flew by, played games with Owen and Mariel, relaxed, watched movies, read some Hero of Ages (even though I probably won't finish it before my flight leaves tomorrow), played with Owen and Mariel some more, started getting ready to pack, wrote my run-on sentence, and subsequently (probably) began packing and stayed up all night reading Hero of Ages in a poor attempt to finish it before my flight leaves at 6 a.m.-ish.
